How Do You Answer Income Tax Questions in ACCA TX?

Income tax computations in ACCA TX reward a clean proforma and correct treatment of each income source and allowance. Here's how to structure the computation and score the marks.

Income tax computations are core to ACCA TX, and they're highly structured — which is good news, because a disciplined proforma earns method marks even when a single figure goes astray. The examiner wants to see a clear, standard layout and correct treatment of each income source, allowance and band. Note that TX is based on a specific Finance Act, so always use the tax rates and allowances for the examinable version.

Use the standard proforma

Set out the computation by income type in the usual columns and order:

  • Employment income (including taxable benefits).
  • Trading income (adjusted profits).
  • Property income.
  • Savings and dividend income, taxed in their own bands.

Then deduct the personal allowance (watching for the high-income restriction) to reach taxable income, and apply the correct rates and bands.

Watch the classic traps

  • Applying the personal allowance restriction when adjusted net income is high.
  • Taxing savings and dividend income in the wrong bands or forgetting the nil-rate bands.
  • Mishandling gift aid or pension contributions, which extend the basic-rate band.

Show your workings

Support each figure with a clear working — benefits, adjusted trading profit, and so on. Because these are method-driven marks, visible workings protect your score and make it easy for the marker to award own-figure follow-through.
