How Do You Answer Standard Costing Questions in ACCA PM?

Standard costing and variance questions in ACCA PM reward accurate calculations plus clear interpretation. Here's how to earn both the computation and the discussion marks.

Standard costing questions in ACCA PM combine calculation and interpretation, and the best answers score in both. The examiner rewards accurate variance calculations, but often just as many marks come from explaining what the variances mean and what management should do about them. Balancing the two is the skill.

Get the variance formulas right

  • Materials: price and usage variances.
  • Labour: rate and efficiency (and sometimes idle time) variances.
  • Variable overhead: expenditure and efficiency variances.
  • Sales: price and volume (or the contribution/margin variants) variances.

Lay each calculation out clearly and label it favourable (F) or adverse (A). Method marks are available, so a tidy, logical working protects your score even if the final number slips.

Don't stop at the numbers

The interpretation marks are where students leave easy points on the table. For each significant variance, explain a plausible cause tied to the scenario and how variances might interrelate — for example, buying cheaper material (favourable price) causing more waste (adverse usage). Generic 'the variance is adverse because costs were higher' statements score little.

Common pitfalls

  • Confusing price/rate with usage/efficiency variances.
  • Forgetting to flex the budget before comparing to actual.
  • Listing variances without interpreting them or linking causes.

The winning approach is accurate numbers plus scenario-based interpretation. Practising full standard-costing questions and marking them against the official ACCA scheme with The 50% Club shows you where you're dropping calculation marks and where your interpretation is too thin to score.
