How to Answer VAT Questions in ACCA TX

VAT questions in ACCA TX reward a methodical output-minus-input approach and awareness of the key rules on registration, timing and recovery. Here's the exam method.

VAT questions in ACCA TX test whether you can calculate the VAT payable or repayable and apply the main administrative rules. They are among the more scoreable tax questions if you follow a set structure — but always confirm the rules against the Finance Act for your sitting, as thresholds change.

The core calculation

VAT payable is output VAT charged on sales less input VAT recoverable on purchases and expenses. Set it out clearly:

  1. Calculate output VAT on standard-rated and any applicable reduced-rated supplies.
  2. Calculate recoverable input VAT, excluding blocked items such as most business entertainment and cars with private use.
  3. Net the two to find the VAT due to, or repayable from, the tax authority.

Rules examiners love to test

  • The registration threshold and the historic and future turnover tests.
  • The tax point rules that fix when VAT is due.
  • Relief for irrecoverable (bad) debts once the conditions are met.
  • Special schemes such as cash accounting, annual accounting and the flat-rate scheme.

Because the marks are for method and applying the correct rule, showing your workings protects your own-figure marks. Marking a full VAT answer against the official ACCA scheme with The 50% Club shows you which steps scored — and where a wrong figure still earned its method mark.
