Is an ACCA Tutor Worth It?

For most students who are stuck, an ACCA tutor is worth it — but only if you use it for the right thing. A one-to-one tutor is expensive per hour compared with a recorded course, so the value comes from what a course can't give you: someone who reads your actual answers, tells you exactly where you're dropping marks, and shows you how the examiner wants you to write. If that's your gap, a few focused sessions can be the difference between another resit and a pass.

When a tutor is worth every euro

• You've failed a paper once or twice and can't work out why — a tutor can diagnose it in one session.
• You understand the content but keep losing marks on exam technique, application and professional-skills marks.
• You're on a Strategic Professional paper (SBL, SBR, APM) where marks come from tailored, well-structured writing.
• You've run out of time self-studying and need someone to prioritise what actually matters before the exam.

When it might not be

If you've never studied the syllabus at all, one-to-one time is an expensive way to learn it from scratch — a study text, revision kit and lectures will cover the teaching far more cheaply. Book a tutor once you've done the groundwork and need feedback, not before. The other honest caveat is fit: a tutor is only worth it if they've passed the exams themselves and know precisely what the marker rewards.

Getting the most from your money

Come to each session with a specific attempt — a full past question you've written — rather than a vague request to "go through the topic". The feedback loop on your own writing is where the value sits. Between sessions, keep practising and marking your answers so you arrive with fresh material each time.
